Japanese Tokoname Ware Sakura Kyusu Teapot
One of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns and the oldest continuously active ceramic tradition. Originating in the late Heian period (12th century), Tokoname ware is highly regarded for its mineral-rich clay from the Chita Peninsula and its long-evolved firing techniques. Designated a “Traditional Craft of Japan” in 1976 and later included in “Japan Heritage” in 2017, it remains a benchmark of Japanese tea ceramics, valued by collectors and tea practitioners worldwide. The Shunju Kiln preserves this lineage through fully hand-crafted production, where each piece is shaped and fired by experienced artisans, balancing tradition with a subtle contemporary aesthetic.
Made from locally sourced green Tokoname clay and fired using traditional reduction techniques, the teapot features a calm grey-green matte finish with natural depth and texture. Rich in iron and naturally micro-porous, the clay subtly interacts with tea, softening tannins and reducing bitterness while enhancing smoothness and aroma clarity. It is especially suited for sencha, green tea, and lightly oxidized oolong. Over time, the surface develops a warm patina, gradually absorbing tea essence and becoming uniquely personalized through daily use.
The body is decorated with a hand-painted cherry blossom motif using traditional mineral pigments, with each brushstroke applied individually by skilled artisans, ensuring every piece is one of a kind. The contrast between the vivid sakura design and the understated clay base creates a refined visual balance. A classic side-handle design ensures safe, ergonomic handling, while the integrated ceramic filter provides smooth, pure pouring without metallic interference. A well-fitted lid improves heat retention and aroma concentration, and the precision-shaped spout delivers a clean, drip-free pour. The result is a functional tea instrument that also serves as a collectible expression of Japanese ceramic heritage.
